1. You should choose your schools based solely upon their tuition. True or False?

False. First, it is crucial that the school you choose meet your interests and career goals. That is something you do not want to sacrifice. Therefore, it is important that you have at least started to narrow in on the careers you are interested in. Read this if you need help with identifying your interests and career goals.

Second, it is false that a school's tuition is not necessarily what you'll pay, because it does not reflect financial aid or extra expenses like travel, housing and books. You need to look at the total cost of attendance, as well as opportunities for financial assistance.

Some institutions have more merit scholarships available than others. Also, if you can carry a tune or a football (or both) as well as do well academically, you may qualify for a more robust scholarship package. It is important to be completely informed of your options and have a good back-up plan.

1. If you make a mistake on the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), it will not have much impact because you can just send in an adjustment. True or False?

According to the US Department of Education, over 75% of the FAFSA forms that are submitted are incorrect! While you can send in adjustments, errors or uncompleted sections can delay your requests for financial aid, or even cause you to lose aid. Since the best aid offers are sent out in the beginning of the process, this could significantly reduce the amount of aid you receive. Some errors can cause you to lose out on financial aid all together.

THE GOOD NEWS: Even kids who have locked you out from their bedrooms since seventh grade are likely to welcome—or at least expect—your input at college admission time.

THE BAD NEWS: Somebody in the family needs to be the organized one and stay on top of piles of paperwork and deadlines. Ideally, this should be the student. In reality, it is usually the parent.
